What to Do When You’re Stuck in a Dark Place

in a dark place

Ever found yourself whispering, “I’m in a dark place and nothing is working”?

Read on.

Not because I have a quick fix.
Not because I’ll give you five steps to feel better instantly.
But because I’ve been there too, and I know that what you really need right now is not another to-do list. What you need is someone to tell you the truth.

You are not alone.
This is not the end.
And just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong.

When You Have Suicidal Thoughts, You’re Not Failing

Let me say it clearly: When you have suicidal thoughts, it doesn’t mean you’re crazy or weak or failing at healing. It means your mind is overwhelmed.

It means that your old way of coping no longer works.
This is not a sign to give up.
It’s a signal that something deeper is telling you something.

And if you’ve been working on yourself, reading the books, listening to the podcasts, showing up to meditate – and still, you’re thinking nothing is working….that doesn’t mean you’re going backward.

It means you’re closer to a breakthrough than you think.

What to Do When You’re Stuck Emotionally or Spiritually

When people ask me what to do when you’re stuck, I don’t give them a big to-do list. I ask them to stop doing for a moment. To pause the fixing. To let themselves be exactly where they are, with compassion and care.

It’s not easy.
What you’re experiencing is not a wall.

It’s a doorway.

The pain you feel is not trying to destroy you. It’s trying to guide you.

And the thoughts that feel unbearably dark?
They’re coming up because you’re ready to learn how to use your mind in a new way.

But only if you want to. You don’t have to.

I’ll say this:

DON’T buy into every scary thought your mind produces..because it’s not true.

Nothing Is Working… or So It Seems

“Nothing is working.”

Those three words come up more than almost anything else in my community.

And here’s what I want you to know: that’s a story.

It only feels true because you’re measuring your healing through the lens of instant results. But the healing you’re doing is foundational. It’s slow. Subtle. And deeply personal to you.

Just because the outside hasn’t shifted yet doesn’t mean the inside hasn’t.
And healing starts on the inside, always.

You are changing your patterns. You’re changing how you respond. You’re changing the way you think about yourself, even if it’s just 5% better than it used to be.

That is progress.

The Dark Night of the Soul Is Not the End

There’s a name for this phase you might be in right now.

It’s called the Dark Night of the Soul. It’s the moment where everything you’ve used to keep yourself afloat stops working. When you have to let go of what’s no longer true, without having found solid ground in what is.

It feels like a breakdown.
But it’s actually a breakthrough.

And if you’re thinking I’m in a dark place and nothing is working, that could be the best sign that something massive is on its way through you. Not because you “manifested” it. But because your mind is shedding old survival strategies that were never yours to keep.

This is transformation in real time.

You Don’t Have to Fix the Whole Thing Today

Let’s take the pressure off.

You don’t have to be completely healed by next week. (You probably won’t be)

You don’t have to prove that your spiritual work is “working.”
You don’t even have to feel better right now.

You just have to stay with yourself.
In the dark. Without judgment.

And when you have suicidal thoughts or feel like nothing is working, you need someone to remind you of this:

These thoughts are not truth.
They’re noisy. And temporary.
And you are allowed to wait them out without reacting.

What If This Darkness Is Here to Help You?

I know that may sound wild.

But what if this darkness is actually helpful?

What if the reason you’re thinking what to do when you’re stuck is because you’re finally ready to see the part of yourself that’s been buried under busyness, coping, and performance?

What if this isn’t failure – but an invitation?

That’s how I see it now.

The moments where I didn’t want to live – those became the moments where I actually started to live differently.

Not because someone gave me a magic answer. But because I got quiet enough to hear a new voice. A kind one. A loving one.

And if you’re still reading this, it means some part of you believes there’s still something worth fighting for. That part is right.

You’re Allowed to Take a Break From the Spiral

If you’re having dark thoughts today, I want you to give yourself permission to do nothing about them. Not fix them. Not fight them. Just notice them. Like weather.

The next time you think I’m in a dark place, ask yourself:

  • Can I be gentle with myself today?

  • Can I stop searching for one minute and just breathe?

  • Can I trust that this too shall pass?

Because it will.

You are not stuck. You are shifting.

One Small Step You Can Take

If this post resonated, and you want support moving gently out of the dark, I created a free tool called The Emotional Scale. It’s the exact thing I use with my clients when they feel like they’re drowning in fear, depression, or overwhelm.

Get the guide HERE.

You don’t have to figure it all out today.

Just take the next breath. The next thought. The next moment.

Healing is possible. Even here.
